Every new construction and significant roof renovation in Berlin must, by law, contain solar cells. It was passed after a vote in June.

Solar energy will become the new norm when it is built or renovated in Berlin from 2023. It was clubbed in mid-June after a vote by the Berlin United States Economic and Energy Committee. The programme aims to have 30% of the roofs in Berlin contain PV installations and to stop CO2 emissions of around 37 000 tonnes annually within the first five years. This is what the organization Solar Power Europe writes in an article.

It is part of Berlin's "Solar City" initiative aimed at achieving a capacity of 4.4 gigawatts of solar energy, which includes a quarter of the city's energy needs. The original plan was for the target to be achieved by 2050, but today the Senate sees the goals being achieved "as soon as possible."

"Berlin shows the right ambitions"

Under the new programme, solar energy production is expected to increase fortyfold compared to today.
"Berlin is showing the right kind of climate ambitions by voting through something that ensures that new and renovated buildings contain solar cells. It is a powerful tool to lead to construction emitting less CO2 and we are seeing more and more examples of more and more people, both regionally and locally, moving towards making solar roofs mandatory to contribute to less CO2 emissions," says Miguel Herrero at Solar Power Europe.
