A refurbished retirement home in Luleå and a newly built retirement home in Boden. These are some of Hemsö's latest investments in elderly care in Norrbotten, where they have clearly chosen a high-profile environmental and sustainability approach.
Both the ancient military town of Boden and the steel industry city of Luleå are located in Norrbotten, which, with its subarctic climate, receives far fewer hours of sunshine per year than the southern parts of the country. However, according to Geri Zyka, project manager at SBP, this can work to their advantage.
The statistics also indicate this to some extent. At the nursing home in Luleå alone, the plant has had an average production of almost 5 megawatts per month since the start of production in June this year (article written on September 15).
- It is a common misconception that solar PV installations are not efficient far up north. The truth is that conditions are optimal for solar cells in that climate - solar panels always produce at their best when there is strong sunshine in low temperatures. Therefore, it is a very well thought-out investment by Hemsö," says Geri Zyka.
The collaboration is described as 'perfect', but was not without its challenges, although it was not entirely unpredictable. In Boden, 242 panels were built on a 500 sqm roof area - in the middle of winter. For Geri Zyka, however, it provided a lifetime of memories.
- During one site visit, there was a heavy snowstorm, which meant we had to delay work for a day for safety reasons. Then Hemsö's property manager showed us around Boden's stunning winter landscape, where we drove around on icy country roads and I was given a display of the military history treasure the city has to offer. It was great fun and also a testament to the great relationship between us and Hemsö during the two installations.
